HTF is throwing a triple header tonight. We've been busy planning an awesome program for you. Check it out and join us at 5 p.m.

THE WOODEN STARS – It has been seven years since the Wooden Stars received a Juno for Best Alternative Album for their outstanding collaboration with Julie Doiron in 2000. At long last, this weekend, The Wooden Stars are celebrating the fruit of their long labour with the release of a brand new disc: People are Different. It was totally worth the wait. Find out why when we speak with them this evening. Then, catch them at Babylon on Saturday with special guests TUSKS, Samir Khan’s project (formerly of Kepler).
http://www.thewoodenstars.com/

TOMI SWICK – Here’s a tough guy from Hamilton whose angelic meanderings have just recently earned him a Juno for best new artist of 2007. Backed up by a major label, Tomi is enjoying the success of his slick new disc: Stalled Out in the Doorway. He’ll be performing at the Capital Music Hall tomorrow along with Jeremy Fisher and Simon Wilcox. But first he’ll be Hopping the Fence on CHUO.
http://www.tomiswickmusic.com/

TIM’S MYTH – What can a local independent band achieve with over $300,000 in support? We’ll find out when we speak with this Ottawa band who have recently been blessed by the money gods. They are releasing a new disc “Departure” this weekend at the Mercury Lounge.

Subject:The Apostle of Hustle melting snow in Ottawa this weekend
Security:Public
Mood: cold

I hope you're enjoying April so far. I'd like to start off by officially apologizing for causing this endless snow. I thought I was sooo clever a few weeks back. After a couple of warm, beautiful, sunny days, I laid down some bets with a few unwitting souls that we would get at least one more big snow dump. Oh, I won those bets alright. But at what cost? Snow is everywhere and it won't stop! Karma, I'm told, puts on a great poker face.

However, on today's Hop The Fence, we have just what you need to help you forget about snow and all winter-related troubles. We will be speaking with The Apostle of Hustle's Andrew Whiteman. Andrew, also a key member of Broken Social Scene has released a second fabulous disc with his Apostle of Hustle bandmates. It's called National Anthem of Nowhere. Guaranteed to give you the warm and fuzzies, this sophomore disc, with its underlying Latin feel, will rock the snow right out of the skies. Catch the band live at Zaphod's on Saturday.
http://www.arts-crafts.ca/apostleofhustle/index2.html

The next few weeks on HTF will be busy. There are a lot of new releases from local and other Canadian artists and everyone, it seems, is going on tour. So tonight we'll be listening to plenty of fine tunes including tracks from Jim Bryson's long awaited new disc, Where the Bungalows Roam (he's at the Blacksheep this weekend), The Acorn's Tin Fist (at Babylon tonight), and Do Make Say Think's You, You're A History In Rust (at Barrymore's on Saturday).

So in the words of PJ Harvey, "turn on your radioooooo-oh-oh" and tune it to CHUO FM at 89.1 on your FM dial in Ottawa. Or listen on-line at: www.chuo.fm

Alright here’s the pitch. For 16 years, CHUO has been bringing you super cool programs in a wide variety of genres to please the most diverse palates. For my part, Hop The Fence has been supporting Canadian independent musicians for nearly 5 years. Plenty of award winners have appeared on Hop The Fence just as they were crossing the threshold to fame and fortune including K-OS, members of Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire’s Jeremy Gara, Buck 65 and, more recently, Serena Ryder. It’s kinda like a good luck charm … once you’ve Hopped The Fence, the world is your oyster! More importantly many of Ottawa’s rising stars have joined us in the CHUO studios. And it is to you that I appeal this week. We’re always happy to support you in your time of need.

Today is the launch of CHUO’s funding drive. Yep… this is your big opportunity to help us continue to help you. If you’ve got any pocket change to spare, we would greatly appreciate your kind contribution to Ottawa’s community radio. Your generosity will help us keep the independent music scene bending airwaves across our fine city and around the world via the Internet. (We have regular listeners in Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver and even Florida!)

All you need to do is press the reply button on this e-mail and say “Yes, Anne-Marie, I’d love to donate!” It’s easy and pain free. How about if I say, “Pretty please with a cherry on top”?

On today’s program we’ll be spinning tunes from some great bands coming to town this weekend including folk singer-songwriter and activist, Ember Swift who is at the Rainbow Thursday next and Ottawa folk-jazz artist, Christine Graves, who is performing at the NAC Fourth Stage tomorrow evening. (I'm still firming up plans to speak with these two fine artists this evening.) We’ll also be cuing up some Ox for you (at the Blacksheep tonight) and lots of other good stuff.

It’s all happening on CHUO FM at 89.1 on your FM dial in Ottawa. Or listen on-line at: www.chuo.fm

Thanks for being part of this great community.

Subject:Everything old is new again
Security:Public

Tonight on Hop The Fence, we're featuring two very different artists who believe everything old can be new again. Oddly enough, they're both covering Leonard Cohen songs on their latest discs. (Yeah, Leonard, that puts you in the "old" category.)

Klezmer music. What is it? According to, Canadian klezmer icon, GEOFF BERNER, it’s wedding music. So he set out to compose a modern-day wedding album: “Wedding Dance of the Widow Bride”. As the title suggests, this isn’t the merriest of occasions. Berner rejuvinates traditional klezmer with raw punk energy tinged with dark humour. Sometimes humour is the only way to escape a scary situation, and what could be more frightening than one’s nuptials! (Scary but fun, for all the soon-to-be-hitched readers!) Geoff is releasing his new disc tonight at the Blacksheep Inn. But first, he’ll be calling us in the studio at CHUO.
http://www.geoffberner.com/

While the rest of us spent our teen years listening to ear piercing punk rock, sticking safety pins in our lobes and donning blinding orange spikes for hair... (erhhh well, maybe that was just me, sorry)... SERENA RYDER was listening to gramma’s old favorites. At the tender age of 23, Toronto-based, SERENA RYDER has released her major label debut: “If Your Memory Serves You Well”. It’s a collection of timeless classics penned by Canadian artists, but popularized by non-Canadians, including “Good Morning Starshine” and “You Were Always On My Mind”. A gifted songwriter in her own right, Serena, breathes new life into these old classics. We’ll be speaking with her this evening before she makes her way to the capital on Monday at Barrymore’s.

Subject:Ottawa Music Coalition Concert Series
Security:Public

So I’ve finally emerged from the haze of codeine that shielded me from pain. My brain is regaining clarity and my spirit is lightening. No matter what they say, there’s no such thing as “routine” surgery. I’ve discovered that I am not a very good patient. And daytime TV sucks big time. I spent the last week with stitches protruding from my mouth. I gotta say, for a radio host, that’s pretty far from ideal. I feel like I have spiders weaving webs between my teeth. Errhhh alright well, enough about me… Let’s talk about Ottawa’s awesome musical talent.

Last fall, a number of Ottawa musicians, club owners, festival coordinators, local media peeps and other like-minded citizens banded together to help raise awareness of the vast amount of talent we have lurking in our neighborhoods. The Ottawa indie music scene is thriving but we don’t want it to be the capital’s best kept secret. With this in mind, 33 1st Productions, in conjunction with Gallery Studios & the Ottawa Music Coalition is presenting a concert to showcase some of the city’s talent. It’s on tonight and you’re invited. The show, which is expected to be the first of a series, will feature the delightfully talented Sarah Metzer, along with Once Past Silver and The Ethics. It’s all happening at Ottawa’s “rock’n’roll” church: The Ecclesiast Church in the Glebe. It’s on Fifth Avenue, 1/2 block East of Bank. Look for the blue doors, they’ll open at 8pm. Pay what you can.
If you’re interested in participating in the Ottawa Music Coalition, you can get more info on our myspace page:
http://www.myspace.com/ottawamusiccoalition

We’ll be previewing some tunes from the featured artists on Hop The Fence this evening starting at 5 p.m. Joining us in the studio will be members of Once Past Silver, an Ottawa-based folk trio.

I never thought I'd hear myself say that I'm glad to see snow and relieved that the weather has cooled considerably. I'm a sun worshipper. I love those exceedinly hot, humid summer days when everyone else is melting and complaining. I bask in that heat. In fact, I have a rule - you can't complain about the heat if you're going to complain about the cold in winter. pick one. So I choose to hate cold winter days.

But this year, all of us here in Ottawa thought winter would never come. We had a green Xmas, and a green New Year's day. I thought I might have to mow the lawn in mid-December! It just wasn't right.

All that to say, I can't wait to strap on my skates and head out on the canal. Winterlude festivities start tonight with a concert series at the Snowbowl. The bowl is located on the ice in front of the NAC. (http://www.canadascapital.gc.ca/winterlude/)

I spoke with the artistic coordinator at NCC about the events and how he manages the enterntainment for Winterlude. In his 10th year, Joel DeLaquis, who also coordinates artistic programming for Canada Day, sounds like he loves his job. Listen to Hop The Fence tonight for details about upcoming events and how local talent can get in on the action too.

This week on Hop The Fence:

We’ll be welcoming Selina Martin to the program. She is in Ottawa this weekend with a few friends who will be taking part in a “song circle”. It’s the Bluebird North Tour 2007 making a stop at the Library and Archives Canada Auditorium (395 Wellington St.) on Saturday night. Selina Martin is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Featuring the likes of Martin Tielli and co-produced by Michael Phillip Wojewoda, her latest CD, Life Drawing Without Instruction, showcases her witty wordsmithing and incomparable style.
http://www.selinamartin.com

Last week, I told you about Montreal’s Patrick Watson getting one of his songs aired on Grey’s Anatomy – (the prime time soap opera about sex-obsessed medical doctors and interns.) Due to the sheer number of North Americans who watch the show, one song could easily catapult the sales of our beloved Canadian indie artist. This week, Toronto’s Lily Frost had the honour of having her song ‘Enchantment’ (from her Cine-Magique album) played on the show. She’ll be joining us today to talk about how this came about and why television is becoming an increasingly attractive medium for Canadian musicians. To hear more of Lily’s sultry vocals, take a jaunt to the Blacksheep Inn in Wakefield tonight where she is appearing.

My hero, rock's most sophisticated icon, David Bowie turned 60 this week. As coincidence would have it, on the same day, I adopted a lovely puppy with mis-matched eyes (one blue, one brown). I wanted to call him something clever like Ziggy, but he seems rather attached to his given name, Nanook. I'm slowly going through my Bowie repertoire with him. So far The Man Who Sold The World has really got his tail wagging. And Rebel Rebel could be a defining song for him as we still have plenty of training to get through! He's a real cutie and is enjoying his new home with us. I look forward to introducing him to the gang at CHUO! (If you're looking for a pet, please consider your local humane society or a rescue organization.)

Hopping the Fence tonight are Ottawa's BELLA BOMBS! 3 chicks and a dude, the Bella Bombs will be tearing up the stage at Babylon for their CD release party this Saturday. Their new disc, Liquid Explosion will rip your punker heart to shreds. Join us at 5 p.m. for our chit chat with da bombs!

There are going to be alot of people on stage at Zaphod's this Saturday during a special triple bill featuring 2 of my fave Ottawa bands, My Dad vs Yours and As The Poets Affirm. Headlining the evening are Toronto's ROCK PLAZA CENTRAL led by Chris Eaton and 6 bandmates! The band have been galloping up the college charts with their latest disc "Are We Not Horses". A few months ago I was tickled by Ox's remake of an old classic rock song, Surrender. Now Rock Plaza Central give us their take on Justin Timberlake's current dance hit "Sexy Back". This sort of stuff really gets me giggling! Check it out on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIKkkB4qXAc

I checked out Patrick Watson last night at Zaphod's. I was surprised that it wasn't sold out. Patrick is immensly talented. I love the ethereal feel of his music and vocals, which is enhanced by the peculiar use of a guitar pedal. And I really like the way he incorporates classical piano into his indie pop sound. He entertained us with a few Eric Satie compositions. Very nice and creative. Patrick promised to join us on Hop The Fence next time he is in town.

A few weeks ago, our CHUO studios were graced with the presence of Marie-Josée Houle and her accordion. This week, in my earnest attempt to explore a wide variety of eclectic instruments, I’ll be welcoming ANDREA SIMMS-KARP to our studios. She is bringing her banjo ! How many young indie folk hipsters do you know play banjo? Join us on the air tonight at 5 pm. Andrea will perform live in studio for us. If you like it, you can check out a full set on Monday night at Zaphods.
http://www.myspace.com/andreasimmskarp

Also joining us this evening is multi-talented, local producer Dean Watson of the band, LURE. Dean and his merry friends are organizing a special Christmas bash at Barrymore’s next Friday, December 22nd. LURE will be headlining the magical evening along with special guests, Ana Miura, Sarah Deluca, Amanda Rheaume, Sarah Metzner, Marty Sobb, Andrea Simms-Karp, Peter Voith and of course Santa and elves of every sort. Since it’s that time of year when it’s better to give than to receive, donations of winter clothes and/or canned food for the Snowsuit Fund and the Ottawa Food Bank will be accepted (and will reduce door charge by 2 dollars). I hear there are also plans for a kissing booth for charity! I’m still not sure who’ll be doing the kissing – Santa, maybe?

It's December 8. An important date in my realm. It's my mom's b-day and my mom-in-law's d-day, one year ago. It's odd how numbers and dates intermingle and come together to signify stuff.

MALAJUBE. Here's another odd thing for a franco-Ontarian girl. I'll tell you something many of you don't know: I'm French. Half French-Canadian and half-Belgian. Yet, Hop The Fence is an English program featuring mainly English indie bands. That's because I've been adequately assimilated into the anglophone community. This has been an ongoing cause of irritation around our family for years. This is why a band like MALAJUBE are so important to me and to many bilingual music fans. They haven't denied their roots. They've remained true to who they are and have succeeded in crossing boundaries between franco and anglo. It's all about the music right? It should be. I'm not saying they're the only band to acheive this crossover, but they've managed to to attract the attention of a fairly wide audience including the media. Maybe that's the big step required. MALAJUBE have great songs. Some soft. Many hard rockin'. All very creative. If you haven't already caught the MALAJUBE bug, allow me to expoose you. Tune in to Hop The Fence tonight and check out the buzz. C'est super cool, man. If anyone understands the anglo-franco dichotomy, it's us Ottawans living on the Quebec border.

Did you know CHUO is the nation's only bilingual community radio station? You've got to check it out. Tune in to CHUO FM at 89.1 on your FM dial in Ottawa. Or listen on-line at: www.chuo.fm

LUKE DOUCET is returning to Ottawa tonight at Zaphod’s. Seems we haven’t seen the diminutive blond Canadian cowboy in these here parts in a while. His latest disc, Broken (and other rogue states) is indeed a fine piece of work. With finely crafted songs, bitter-sweet lyrics and really crunchy guitars, his music has been described as “country vérité”. He's scheduled to give us a call tonight - we’ll find out what Luke’s been up to lately.

MARIE-JOSÉE HOULE plays the accordion like you never thought possible. This ain’t your grand-pa’s music … (although I think gramps might have appreciated Marie-Josée’s sultry style). THE DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS – After releasing two discs in 2004 they made us wait a couple of years for their latest, Northern Living Northern Lights. With 13 danceable and cleverly orchestrated songs, it was well worth it. Their official CD launch is at Babylon this Saturday night. Hear a preview first on Hop The Fence tonight and we’ll be chatting with Rob Skitmore. http://www.deptforeignaffairs.com/

TIIU MILLISTVER – Those of us who were at the station the day Tiiu sang live on Hop The Fence a few months back are still buzzing about her explosive performance. What a powerhouse! I was hoping for an encore tonight but Tiiu has recently moved to Guelph and will be phoning in her interview. However, we have in hand her brand new EP, Gone Are The Days, a mix of five delicately crafted folk songs. Don’t miss her upcoming live performance at the Blacksheep Inn on Thursday, November 23rd.

He's living the dream. JUSTIN RUTLEDGE a writer, singer and musician whose richness of lyrics and intense depiction of characters, locales, and moments in time has released his second album, The Devil On A Bench In Stanley Park, with the help of a few friends from a little band called Blue Rodeo. That album title should give you an indication of the imagery he conjures in his songs. He’s also nabbed a great gig touring across the country as opener for Jim Cuddy, which brings him to Ottawa at the NAC on Tuesday, November 14. Catch him first tonight on Hop The Fence.

Also appearing on Hop The Fence this evening, a relatively new band made up of Ottawa musicians we’ve met here before. JETPLANES OF ABRAHAM includes the peculiar mix of Kingston Fog’s Rick Devereux and Renée Leduc and For The Mathematics' Clayton Fisher. Rounding off the line up are Caleb Abbott, Craig Mainprize and Chris Vechsler. The band is set to release their debut CD on November 18 at Zaphod’s. It’s November already! Aaaghhhhh How does that happen? It seems like just last week, me and a few thousand concert-going friends were sweating up a storm under the hot moonlit summer skies of Ottawa. And look at us now, all bundled up in fall fashions, knits, woolies, leathers for some?, hats, scarves. Mitts will follow very soon. In order to forget all that, I spent a little time this week setting up an account on MySpace. It was just a matter of time before I caved in to peer pressure. Seems like a logical trend to follow and I'm nothing if not a little trendy around the edges. Come check it out at: http://www.myspace.com/hopthefence

This week on Hop The Fence, I am pleased to welcome back to the studio, Ottawa’s THE SOIREE. Bryce, Matt, Eric and Mike have taken the last year or so to hone their sound to perfection. Keeping their rootsy, alt-country sound, they’ve allowed more influences to creep into their work. The result is a new disc called, Birds, which sounds much more complex, at times heart-wrenching, at times quirky. Sounds like these homeboys are on the right track. Hear it for yourself tonight at 5 p.m. and on Saturday at Irene's Pub when The Soiree throw a CD-release party.

We’ll be listening to lots of fine Canadian music between 5 and 6 p.m. this Friday.

Also, we’ll be speaking with a musician who has always followed his heart in the genre-crossing, stripped down, DIY movement and with great acclaimed success. We are proud to welcome back to the show, MARK BROWNING, aka OX. Ox's long awaited new disc, American Lo Fi, just released this week is confirming previous accolades of Mark's unique ingenuity. Blending 70s rock americana with folk and country, the vulnerability of his songs and the potency of his words are emphasized by Mark's distinct voice. Ox is performing at The Blacksheep Inn on Thursday (October 26). Check it out! You don’t want to miss their twangy remake of Cheap Trick’s Surrender! Twangy? Yeah, well kinda…

Friday the 13th – long renowned as a day when luck is lost and trouble is found. But here on Hop The Fence, we’re kicking the gremlins out of the studio and making room for 2 talented Canadian bands from widely differing backgrounds and genres.

First up: FOR THE MATHEMATICS - Taking their cue from exotic rockers The Mars Volta and now-defunct At The Drive-In, Ottawa’s For The Mathematics are breaking the sound barrier and bending vocal chords, guitar strings and ear drums in ways you never thought possible. With the release of their new CD, We Impend, these five musicians will be doling out hefty portions of math- and prog-rock tonight at Barrymore’s. But first they're stopping by the CHUO studio at 5 p.m.

Next up: THE CAPE MAY. We’ll be changing the tone abit with the pretty but dark and cinematic sounds of The Cape May. The Calgary-based band have just released their sophomore disc, Glass Mountain Roads. Come wallow in their richly layered soundscapes when they perform at The Blacksheep Inn on Thursday evening. But hear them first tonight on CHUO as The Cape May phone in to fill us in on their latest adventures from the road.

Birds rockin’ for birds – we’re not talking turkey here!

If you like animals, birds specifically, and you like the musings of the fairer sex, then I’ve got just the thing for you. Three of Ottawa’s finest feminine musicians will be performing at a benefit show for the Ottawa Wild Bird Rescue Centre on Saturday. The show featuring Casey Comeau, Ana Miura and Amanda Rheaume takes place at Cafe Dekcuf, (221 Rideau St., upstairs).

AMANDA RHEAUME will be coming by the studio today to chat with us. Amanda is an energetic rocker with a powerful voice. She will be bringing her guitar and gracing us with a live in-studio performance. Don’t miss it. These live on-air performances are far and few between. As long as I push the right buttons, it should be a great program!
